Preventing Hemorrhoids

Develop Good Bowel Habits
Everybody has different bowl habits so you should follow your own rhythm and use the bathroom when you need to. Do not ignore the urge to go because this can ultimately lead to constipation, hard stools, as well as straining. Avoiding straining at bowel movements is thought to aid at preventing hemorrhoids. Make sure you wipe gently with clean and soft toilet tissue or baby wipes.

Train to Have Regular Bowel Movements
Try to sit on the toilet for several minutes at the same time each day. Doing this after meals is most beneficial.

Eat More Fiber
You should eat between 25-30 grams of fiber a day. Foods that are high in fiber include beans, fresh fruits, and grains such as rice, broccoli, carrots and other vegetables. By adding these foods to your daily diet you can prevent bloating and discomfort.

Drink Fluids
Drinking lots of water, as well as eating more fiber, can greatly ease constipation. Adults should drink between 6-8 glasses of water a day. The reason water is so beneficial in preventing hemorrhoids is because it helps make stool soft and bulky.

Exercise
Exercising promotes digestion and also eases constipation. Even leisurely swimming and walking can be extremely beneficial. Don't forget to drink plenty of water while exercising.

Self Care

Even though there are ways to alleviate the discomforts that come with hemorrhoids, the best way to treat hemorrhoids is to visit Dr. Sunje and seek help.

Self care can relieve symptoms of hemorrhoids. The tips below can help reduce swelling and alleviate some of the pain.

Sitz Bath
This means sitting in a few inches of luke warm bath water. Sitting in this solution for 15-20 minutes a day can greatly relieve pain from hemorrhoids and keep the area very clean. A sitz bath fits over your toilet and can be purchased at most medical supply stores.

Apply Ice Packs
Applying cold ice packs to the inflamed area around the anus can also help relieve pain and reduce swelling.

Do Not Use Dry Toilet Paper
If you have inflamed hemorrhoids using dry toilet paper can further irritate the area. Try using moist toilettes or wet toilet paper.

Laxatives
Laxatives can ease constipation but make sure you first ask your doctor for advice on whether or not you should use them, and make sure you use the laxatives only as directed.

Push Back Hemorrhoids
If you have a hemorrhoid that has prolapsed, or fallen out of place, carefully try to push the hemorrhoid back into the anal canal.
